August 22, 2017. The Irish travelled to Columbus North on Tuesday to face the 15th ranked Columbus North Bulldogs on a humid August night. The Irish opened the scoring early. After earning a corner kick in the opening minutes, Senior Matt Schepers redirected the driven ball from Senior Trey Kapsalis out and Junior Nate Griffin hammered it home for an early 1-0 lead.

Minutes later, however, the Bulldogs countered and even the score 1-1. Eight minutes later, with 28 minutes to go in the first half, Columbus North took the lead 2-1. As the half wore on both sides earned scoring opportunities and neither were able to capitalize. However with less than a minute to play in the half, Junior Noah Gruber was fouled hard in the middle of the pitch. Senior Clay Troyer played a quick restart to Kapsalis, who sent a ball wide to Junior Jacob Schneider. Schneider took several touches and crossed the ball into the penalty area where Junior Andrew Darling slotted it home with only a few seconds to play in the half. At halftime, the sides were all square at 2-2.

In the second half the Irish looked threatening from time to time, but allowed Columbus North several counterattack opportunities that the Bulldogs capitalized on and ultimately beat the Irish 4-2.

Next the Irish host the Warren Central Warriors on Saturday, August 26 at 1:30 PM for their home opener. The Junior Varsity plays at noon.
