The Indiana High School Athletic Association has released the football tournament classifications and sectional assignments for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.  The Fighting Irish will drop down from Class 6-A to Class 5-A for the two-year period.  However, Cathedral will still play up one class higher than the school’s enrollment would dictate due to the IHSAA success factor, based on the team’s recent tournament success.

Under the six-class system, Class 5-A will be comprised of 37 schools, divided into three four-team and five five-team sectionals.  The Irish will play in Sectional 13 with Roncalli, Arsenal Tech, Plainfield, and Decatur Central.  Roncalli is also playing up one class under the success factor rule after winning the Class 4-A state title in 2016.

The Rebels are the most common opponent Cathedral has faced in tournament play with the Irish holding a 9-7 advantage over Roncalli in post-season meetings including six consecutive victories, the last one coming in 2012.  Cathedral defeated Decatur Central in Class 5-A sectional games in 2013 and 2014, while the Irish have a 6-1 record all-time in tournament games against Plainfield.  Cathedral and Arsenal Tech have previously played 56 times during the regular season, but the two city schools have never faced each other in the state tournament.

Heading into the 2017 season, Cathedral has won 54 of its last 58 tournament games and eleven consecutive sectional titles.  Cathedral previously played in Class 5-A for the 2013 and 2014 seasons, winning the football state championship both years.
