The #14 Cathedral Lady Irish soccer team advanced to Saturday’s noon Sectional Final with a 4-0 shutout of the Lawrence North Wildcats at North Central on Thursday night. The Irish will again face sectional host North Central, who they played to a 2-2 tie in September.
The Irish wasted no time in taking control of the semifinal match thanks to a goal by senior Ashley Levingston just 34 seconds into the game. Nine minutes in senior Nicolette Kapsalis appeared to add a second goal off a free kick from 20 yards out but it was ruled indirect and waived off by the official. At the midway point of the half junior Audrey Kleiman nearly bent the left posts with a shot that was just wide. The Irish added their second goal when freshman Maddie Wirth found the net with 8:27 left in the half.
Lawrence North came out aggressively in the second half, but could not get the ball past sophomore Sophia Saucerman and the rest of the Irish defense. The Wildcat goalie made a nice save of a Kapsalis penalty kick, but Sophomore Jennifer Utzinger later commandeered a loose ball past midfield and managed to push it up-field past two Wildcat defenders for a breakaway goal with 10:03 remaining. Kleiman added the fourth goal at the 9:11 mark, at which point the Irish cleared their bench and kept creating opportunities to score. Lawrence North had one final chance with ten seconds remaining, but a free kick from 20 yards out sailed high just over the outstretched hand at the crossbar of senior keeper Abbie Heinzmann.
Gates at North Central open at 11 AM Saturday, October 8, for the 12:00 PM Girls Sectional Final against the North Central Panthers. At 2 PM, the Irish boys soccer team will also square off against the Panthers in the Boys Sectional Final.
