The 2016 soccer season for the Cathedral Lady Irish came to a surprising end on Saturday with a 1-0 upset loss at the hands of the North Central Panthers at North Central. For the season, the Irish finished with a 9-7-2 record, scoring 38 goals and surrendering 24 over the 18 game season.
On Saturday, the Panthers, who had tied the Irish 2-2 on Sept. 19, scored the game’s only goal with 4:48 remaining in the first half. North Central took a defensive posture for the entire 80 minutes, leaving as many as seven payers back deep inside the 18.
The Irish graduate six seniors, goalkeeper Abbie Heinzmann, IU commit Nicolette Kapsalis, Tennessee Martin commit Ashley Levingston, Samford commit Rachel Meta, Annie Morris, and Kaitlyn Ray.
Despite the loss of these six ladies, the future looks bright for the Irish with many good players returning.
The Sectional loss was a bitter pill to swallow, ending the longest active sectional win streak in the state, but leaving the returning players hungry for the 2017 tournament. The highlight of the varsity season was definitely the comeback victory over then 1A #1 Bishop Chatard for the City Championship. The 2017 class finished their careers at Cathedral with 3 City titles and 3 Sectional titles.
