Boys Varsity Swimming, Girls Varsity Swimming · Coach Hill Meets with Cathedral Swimmers and Parents

Taking time out from a busy day of meetings, Cathedral’s new swim coach Ashley Hill recently spent some quality time with swimmers and parents. Coach Hill called the meeting to talk about her plans for the swim and dive team this season and to listen to the student athletes and their parents about their goals and aspirations.

Coach Hill has been involved with competitive swimming for over 14 years on both the JV and the varsity levels. She comes to Cathedral from Saint Francis High School in Mountain View, California which consistently has over 200 athletes participating in the high school swimming and diving programs.

The Lancers girls and boys swimming and diving teams made school history during the last season. “Our girls just came (in) second in the state of California, which was kind of fun and exciting. Our boys were 17th this year. Both boys and girls won leagues for the first time in history and both took second in sectionals this year for the first time in the history of the school.  It was a good season.”

When asked about her plans for the Cathedral Swim and Dive teams, Coach Hill replied, “We’re really looking for our incoming swimmers and our current swimmers that may not be swimming for Cathedral. So we definitely want to get them back in the program.  We’re looking forward to stepping up our training program both in dry-land and in the pool. We’re definitely going to be a hard-working, detail-oriented program, so that’s going to be fun.”

When asked about Cathedral athletes from other programs seeking a conditioning opportunity, “As far as getting athletes that are currently playing other sports, there’s nothing like training in the water. You’re training everything, you’re getting your upper-body, you’re getting your abs, you’re getting your legs, you’re getting breath control, you’re getting discipline. It teaches you how to compete. Track and swimming both do that in a way that no other sport really can.”

Besides coaching the Irish swimmers and divers, Coach Hill will also be directly involved with Campus Ministry, “I’ll be working with Charlene Witka in Campus Ministry, working a little bit on the Girls Junior Retreat, working on sophomore service, working on instilling our Holy Cross values at Cathedral which I’m excited about because I come from a Holy Cross high school in California. And really spending this year helping to solidify all the work that Campus Ministries has done in the past.”

Although Coach Hill has spent over a decade coaching and teaching on the west coast, she actually hails from the Indianapolis area. “My mother and my younger brother live here. My mom’s entire family is here. I’ve always considered Indiana my home.”

If you see her in the hallway or on campus, please extend a Cathedral Irish welcome to Coach Hill and watch for the swimming and diving call-out meeting later this fall.
