The local coaches have selected five Cathedral seniors to the 2017 All-City football team, led by linebacker Hugh Davis who was chosen as the City Defensive Player of the Year. Davis was second on the Irish this season for most tackles with 65, including 11 sacks and 18 tackles for a loss. He also recovered two fumbles, returning one 94 yards for a touchdown.
Joining Davis on the all-city defense is linebacker Jackson Barrow who led Cathedral with 76 solo and 94 total tackles. Barrow made 15 tackles for a loss and sacked the quarterback three times.
Named to the all-city team on offense were lineman Emil Ekiyor, running back Markese Stepp, and placekicker Tyler Sylvia. Ekiyor was one of three finalists for the state’s prestigious Mr. Football award. Stepp averaged almost eight yards per carry while rushing for 975 yards and 17 touchdowns. Sylvia converted 43 of 44 point after kick attempts and booted 68% of his kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.
Cathedral had the most players named to the all-city team followed by Bishop Chatard, Cardinal Ritter, and Arlington with four each. Scecina, Arsenal Tech, Manual, and Heritage Christian each placed three players on the all-city squad.
